Maybe the mornings get darker, but it stays light later in the evening, giving you more light in a 24 hour period.

I was checking my town on accuaccuweather.com today. According to them, sunset is 4:21. But on the solstice sunset is 4:24. But on the solstice the sun rises later in the day, so there is less daylight. Right now I have 9 hours 10 minutes daylight. On the solstice I have 9 hours 9 minutes daylight.

It probably also feels "darker", because it keeps getting colder. I was checking the average temps on accuaccuweather.com, and where I live the coldest time of year is January 9-20. So it will keep getting colder for another month. At least in CT, December on average doesn't have the long term sustained cold and snowcover that January and February has.
